Sprint Dates

All sprints will have the same due dates, but the sprint start and end dates are slightly shifted depending on when a team has their lab (2 hours) and lecture (50 minutes). This is so that sprints always start with a lec and follow the format lec-lab-lec-lab.

You can find a visual of the sprint schedule in the Agile Training Ceremonies page. More details will be covered in the agile training below.

*Please note that sprint 1 starts on August 19, the first day of fall 2024 semester, for both schedules. Once we are in a regular sprint schedule, you will see the lab then meeting schedule shift to starting on Thursdays.

Sprint Tasks

The first sprint has a lot of tasks to help aide with onboarding. To account for this extra time, more of your first sprint grade is allocated towards professional development. In future sprints plan to spend more time working on your project.

✓ Anvil Access

As soon as possible, please create an ACCESS account to access Anvil. Students in the 1 credit hour seminar TDM 101/201/301/401/501 have to do this too. You only need to create one account that you will use for seminar and Corporate Partners. *Do not submit this more than once.*

✓ Download MS Teams

The Data Mine uses MS Teams as one of our primary communication tools. You will need to download MS Teams to your computer. Your team SHOULD NOT use any other form of communication (e.g., Slack, Discord, etc.) unless approved by The Data Mine staff and your mentor.

When: By the first day of class

What: Download MS Teams Desktop App to your computer (and phone if you would like). Review the functions of MS Teams groups.

Where: Download on Microsoft’s website.

✓ Syllabus Quiz

While all teams will work on different projects and mentors will provide a project charter, the syllabus includes information that every Data Mine Corporate Partner student needs to know.

When: Due Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 11:59 PM ET. Late work will not be accepted.

What: Review the fall 2024 syllabus page and fall 2024 course schedule. Take the quiz up to 3 times and your highest score will be taken. You may have the syllabus open while you take the quiz.

Where: Take the quiz on Gradescope

Please note there is a separate syllabus quiz for the 1 credit seminar class (TDM 101, 201, 301, 401, 501).

✓ Agile Training

The Data Mine Corporate Partners will implement Agile methods into our project management. Agile is very popular in industry and the majority of our Corporate Partners use it. Now is the best time to practice it while you are a student.

During your first or second lab session, you will be using Legos to learn the Agile approach to project management. Your TA will be facilitating this Lego lab. We encourage you to review this article.

When: Due Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 11:59 PM ET. Late work will not be accepted.

What: Complete the Agile in The Data Mine Training, participant in the Lego lab activity, and take the quiz.

✓ The Data Mine Pre-Assessment

The Data Mine Corporate Partners wants to proactively collect your feedback on The Data Mine experience. To assist with this, we are asking all students to complete a pre-assessment at the beginning of the semester. Later in the school year, you will complete a mid-year and final assessment.

When: Due Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 11:59 PM ET. This assignment is required

What: Complete the Pre-Assessment survey.

Where: See the assignment on Gradescope titled "Sprint 1: Pre-Assessment"

✓ Team Introduction Survey

your TA will create a team introduction survey to get to know more about your interests, experiences, and goals for your time at The Data Mine.

When: Due Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 11:59 PM ET. This assignment is required

What: Complete the Qualtrics survey provided to you by your TA.

Where: Please ask your TA about this assignment in the first Lab. They will provide you the survey link.

✓ Professional Development

The Data Mine Corporate Partners program is a professional development program. We want to help you develop the skills you need to be successful in your career. We will have a variety of professional development activities throughout the semester.

Each sprint you will complete a few professional development related tasks. To begin, let’s review confidentiality, virtual meeting expectations, email communications and the Kanban Board. Open each accordion by clicking on it, the combined sum pertain to one assignment in Gradescope.

What: Complete Purdue's Data Classification and Handling Training. NDMN & IDMN students (only) download this file and review instead. If you believe that data was incorrectly handled or shared, please notify datamine@purdue.edu immediately.


Where: Complete the knowledge check for this professional development training on Gradescope in the assignment "Sprint 1: Professional Development".


Why: This is required by for all Data Mine members, including staff, by Purdue University.

Why: The Data Mine Corporate Partners students meet with their Corporate Partner Mentors online via Microsoft Teams every week. Being able to conduct yourself professionally in a virtual setting is an important skill for students to develop in The Data Mine.

Why: Data Mine teams are inherently diverse, comprised of members with varied educational backgrounds. Recognizing these differences and being aware of potential biases is crucial.
